NC DMV Appointment Checklist
Check off each item as you gather it. Your progress is saved in this browser — no sign-up needed.
North Carolina DMV knowledge test appointments often book six to eight weeks out, and showing up without the right documents means rebooking — there is no same-day retry. This free checklist tracks every document, parent essential, and prep item required for a Level 1 Limited Learner's Permit appointment, based on official NCDMV requirements.
Your progress saves automatically in this browser. No account, no sign-up, no data ever leaves your device. If you switch browsers or devices, you will need to re-check items.
Common questions about NC DMV appointments
What documents does my teen need at the NC DMV?
For a Level 1 Limited Learner's Permit, the teen must bring proof of age and identity (a certified U.S. birth certificate, valid passport or passport card, Permanent Resident Card, or consular report of birth abroad), proof of Social Security number, one proof of NC residency, a Driving Eligibility Certificate from their school, and proof of completing Driver's Education. The complete document list is in the checklist above.
Does a parent or guardian have to be present at the NC DMV?
Yes. For any applicant under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be physically present at the appointment to sign the application. Digital and faxed signatures are not accepted, and there are no exceptions. If a non-parent adult is bringing the teen, they must carry written, signed consent from the parent or guardian — otherwise DMV staff will turn the teen away.
Are hospital birth certificates accepted at the NC DMV?
No. The NC DMV only accepts an original certified birth certificate or a certified copy issued by Vital Records. Hospital souvenir certificates and photocopies are not accepted. If you do not have a certified copy, you can request one from the Vital Records office in the state where the teen was born — this can take a few weeks, so do not wait.
What counts as proof of NC residency?
The NC DMV accepts utility bills (electric, gas, water), bank or credit card statements, mortgage documents or lease agreements, and government-issued documents that show the current North Carolina address. For teens who live with their parents, the residency document is typically in the parent's name, which is accepted as long as the address matches and the parent is present. A school enrollment letter or report card with the NC address can also work.
Where do I book a North Carolina DMV appointment?
NC DMV knowledge test appointments are booked through the official NCDOT portal at skiptheline.ncdot.gov. Walk-ins are usually turned away at busy offices. Slots at popular locations — Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, Cary — are often six to eight weeks out and disappear within minutes of being posted, so start checking the portal three to four weeks before you want to test.
How does this checklist save my progress?
Checked items are saved automatically in this browser using localStorage. There is no account, no sign-up, and no data ever leaves your device. The same checklist works just as well on a phone — you can install Drive Prep NC as a PWA and the checklist becomes a home-screen tool. If you switch browsers or devices, you will need to re-check items.
